Learning by Touring

We offer many opportunities for classroom students to learn by touring our facilities. In our commitment to education, we strive to bring balanced information and educational opportunities relating to earth science to children and adults alike. Focus is placed on the use of minerals in society with particular emphasis on aggregate mining, production and applications in daily life. We are pleased to offer tours of our facilities to community and educational groups. At selected sites, we also offer wildlife habitat tours. All tours must be prearranged.

When contacting a facility to arrange a tour you will be informed of any special requirements. For example, some facilities limit the size of tour groups and most facilities have a minimum age requirement for tour participants. Visitors who are photographed at the site will be asked to sign a release form that allows Vulcan to use and publish their photographs within certain restrictions.

For additional information, to find a site near you, and/or assistance in preparing for or conducting a tour of a Vulcan facility, please contact learning@vmcmail.com.

What Does a Tour Include?
Tours typically include a general presentation by a Vulcan representative before the group proceeds on the tour of the production facility. The general presentation includes information about Vulcan Materials Company, the use of minerals within society and particularly the role aggregates play in today's world. There is also a discussion of the mining process, how we produce aggregates, the regulatory and permitting requirements and reclamation efforts. A safety talk is also included that addresses the safety requirements for the specific tour and group of visitors.

We categorize our tours into Walking Tours and Windshield Tours, each having slightly different requirements.

Walking Tours

Walking tours may involve a combination of viewing operations from a vehicle as well as actually walking through certain portions of the facility in order to gain a more detailed understanding of the processes involved.

Windshield Tours

A Windshield Tour involves viewing the Vulcan facility from within a vehicle and from selected stopping points which are located in non-operational areas within the facility.

Wildlife Habitat Tours

Many of our facilities are designated official Wildlife Habitats. Check the following list to see if there is a Vulcan Wildlife Habitat in your area.
